What is a Hernia?
A hernia is a defect, or a gap, between the muscle layers of the abdominal wall. Through this defect, tissues which should usually remain in the abdomen are able to protrude through the abdominal wall and frequently present as a lump or a mass on the abdomen or in the groin. They can occur without any specific cause or can happen after surgery on the abdominal wall. Hernias can vary from small to very large and complicated. Symptoms can range from a minor nuisance to life-threatening.
