For nearly three years, Union Hospital and Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children have been working together to care for children in and around Cecil County. Physicians from Nemours have been providing around-the-clock care for patients on Union Hospital’s pediatrics units, consultations for children receiving treatment in the Emergency Department, and newborn consultations in the Maternal & Infant Center.

In an exciting expansion of that partnership, in July 2016 pediatric nurses from duPont Hospital for Children joined the clinical team at Union to provide an even higher level of care for Union’s pediatric patients and their families. As part of this first-of-its-kind partnership, Nemours nurses and nursing assistants will staff the pediatrics unit 24/7, bringing the same level of patient and family-centered care delivered at duPont Hospital for Children closer to home for families in Cecil County and neighboring areas. This collaboration is led by Nemours Associates Dr. Haytham Hamwi, who serves as Chief of Pediatrics, and Lisa Jager, who serves as Nurse Manager for Nemours duPont Pediatrics at Union Hospital.

As part of this partnership expansion, 13 Union Hospital nurses and nursing assistants transitioned to Nemours and underwent additional clinical training that included time spent working at duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. These nurses will continue to rotate through duPont Hospital for Children on a regular basis to sharpen their clinical skills and further their clinical education. Leaders from Nemours and Union worked to align clinical and administrative policies and procedures between the two organizations to assure a seamless transition for both staff and patients.

“Over many decades of service, Nemours created an exemplary professional nursing practice that contributes to the best possible patient outcomes and has received national recognition for excellence in pediatric nursing,” commented Jane Mericle, MHS-CL, BSN, RN, CENP, Chief Nurse Executive & Operational Vice President—Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. “Whether it’s in the emergency department at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware or on the pediatrics unit at Union Hospital, families can expect the same level of nursing excellence wherever they receive care.”

“At Nemours, we made a promise to do whatever it takes to help children grow up healthy and reach their full potential,” remarked Haytham Hamwi, M.D., Site Chief of Pediatrics for Nemours duPont Pediatrics at Union Hospital. “Adding Nemours pediatric nurses to our clinical team at Union Hospital allows us to provide high quality specialized pediatric care in a community health care setting.”

“Union Hospital of Cecil County is excited about the opportunity to partner with Nemours duPont to improve the level of pediatric care and expand our services portfolio to patients and families here in our community. This landmark collaboration is comprehensive and marks the beginning of many other possibilities to promote wellness for children in Elkton and other surrounding areas,” stated Katie Boston-Leary, MBA, MHA, BSN, CNOR, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer & Sr. Vice President of Patient Care Services.
