Smoking Policy

As a health care institution, it’s our responsibility to restore and promote health among the citizens of our community. Specifically it is the objective of Union Hospital to ensure the good health of our patients, visitors and employees. The hospital is also required to comply with The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare standards mandating a smoke-free environment in all health care organizations. Union Hospital is a smoke-free campus. Smoking is prohibited in every area both indoor and outdoor.

What will we do to help if you are a smoker while you are hospitalized?

  • Our nurses will ask you about your smoking history on admission and ask if you would like to receive nicotine replacement therapy and/or smoking cessation counseling while you’re hospitalized.
  • Nicotine replacement therapy will be ordered by the physician.
  • Basic smoking cessation counseling will be provided by the respiratory therapists.
  • Information will be provided on community resources for outpatient programs.
  • Follow-up smoking cessation efforts by physicians.
